This was my first read from this author—isn’t that a great cover? It’s a story that a lot of writers can relate to.
Horror author Tyler Parks hasn’t produced a decent book in years. The book for which he received an advance (already spent) isn’t the book he takes to meet his agent with, and the meeting doesn’t go well. He has a month to produce the agreed upon story.
But it’s his birthday, and his girlfriend gives him a monstrous antique desk—one with an evil spirit that has plans. Suddenly Tyler is writing! That’s a good thing, right?
This book has a real 80’s horror vibe and I really enjoyed it. While most of the characters are hard to like, I was sucked into the story and it didn’t matter.
The only thing that stopped GOTHIC from being a five star book was the ending. I’ve seen it before: an author just can’t figure out how to tie up everything in a satisfying way so just ends it.
Despite the unsatisfying ending, GOTHIC is still a fun book and it’s worth a read.
